Washington Rallies Behind Danielsโ Sideline Wake-Up Call, Thrashes Eagles 27-10
LANDOVER, Md. โ Victory Mondays have been few and far between for the Washington Commanders. Their last win before yesterday’s game was on September 27, 2026, when they narrowly defeated the Seattle Seahawks 33โ31.
Yes, the Commanders were favored by 6.5 points in this one against a depleted Philadelphia Eagles team. The Commanders were supposed to win this game even with their own key injuries, and for the first ten minutes on Sunday night, the Washington Commanders looked like a team that had completely forgotten how to play football during their bye week. Pre-snap penalties racked up, a key field goal was missed, a fumble was lost, and the Philadelphia Eagles quickly jumped out to a 10-0 lead.
For Jayden Daniels personally, the time between yesterday’s victory and his last win as a starting quarterback remained exactly 393 days. While the team won that September game against Seattle, backup Marcus Mariota started under center. Daniels’ last personal win as a starter before yesterday was over a year ago, on October 5, 2025, against the Los Angeles Chargers.
But the Washington Commanders completely transformed after an emergency first-quarter sideline intervention by quarterback Daniels, scoring 27 unanswered points to secure a 27-10 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The crucial prime-time win snaps a month-long drought for Washington (2-4-1) while pushing the reeling Eagles (2-6) to their sixth consecutive defeat.
The Sideline Spark
After watching consecutive drives stall due to four self-inflicted pre-snap infractions and a lost fumble by tight end Chig Okonkwo, the usually mild-mannered Daniels reached his breaking point. He gathered the offensive unit on the sideline and forcefully demanded accountability.
“Honestly, it was just complete BS, you know, just how we started,” Daniels candidly admitted in his postgame press conference. “We had a promising drive the first drive, and mental lapses of penalties and stuff like that. At that point, it just wasn’t our brand of football that we want to play or showcase… You just get frustrated and you just got to speak your mind, and that’s what I did. It just helped snap everybody back into place.”
The speech worked flawlessly. Washington committed just two penalties for the remainder of the game and found its offensive identity. Daniels finished the night throwing for 217 yards and a touchdown, orchestrating an 11-play, 89-yard second-quarter drive that culminated in an 8-yard touchdown strike to Stefon Diggs to tie the game at 10-all.
For Daniels, the victory carried immense personal significance, marking his first win as an NFL starter in over a calendar year following an array of injury setbacks.
“It’s a blessing from God just to go out there, and everything I’ve been through in my career so far,” Daniels said. “From different injuries and a lot of different setbacks.” Asked about waiting over a year to taste victory as a starter again, Daniels joked, “It probably felt longer.”
Quinnโs Brutal Honesty and Defensive Lockdown
While Daniels sparked the offense, head coach Dan Quinn got to watch his defense utterly suffocated the Eagles over the final three quarters. Playing without injured star quarterback Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia leaned on backup Tanner McKee, who was swarmed by Washington’s front seven.
The Commanders racked up a season-high five sacks and held the Eagles to just 268 total yardsโnearly a hundred of which came during a meaningless final drive. Credit to Daronte Jones who is the defensive coordinator for the Commanders, but Quinn recently took over defensive play-calling duties following a mid-season reshuffle. The Commanders also added veteran coach Steve Wilks to the defensive staff in an advisory and game-planning role. It worked.
Some might say it all works because the Eagles are just a terrible team while giving the Commanders no credit. This is the NFL. The Commanders have a long list of injured players with a Top-5 of stars who are missing. Key injured Washington Commanders players who are most likely out for the season include Terry McLaurin with a torn left patellar tendon in his knee, Daron Payne, with a severe foot injury, as well as Laremy Tunsil and Leo Chenal, both of whom are on injured reserve due to a torn right triceps and a neck fracture respectively. They are joined on the injury report by Javon Kinlaw, who is out with a knee injury.
Commanders rookie kicker Drew Stevens bounced back from an early 55-yard miss to drill four field goals, including a booming 56-yarder that put Washington on the board. A risky move by Quinn after the earlier miss. It worked.
A late fourth-quarter interception by Rasul Douglas set up a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Rachaad White, followed by an Austin Ekeler two-point conversion to officially put the game out of reach.
Despite the triumph, Quinn did not sugarcoat his team’s ugly, undisciplined start:
“When you come off of a bye, you either rev right up or you need a minute to warm up โ and we took a minute,” Quinn said. Addressing the team’s lingering pre-snap penalty woes, Quinn added, “I clearly have more to investigate.”
With the victory, the Commanders keep their postseason hopes alive in a highly volatile and under-achieving NFC East, sitting just two games behind the first-place New York Giants. They will look to carry this newfound momentum into Week 9 when they host the Los Angeles Rams on John Riggins Day.
